Athan, which means “voice” in English, was founded on January 15th, 2018, and led by youths who value and respect freedom of expression. Athan is a merger of the Research Team for Telecommunications Law and We Support Journalists, with an aim to promote freedom of expression in a more systematic and wide-spreading manner. Athan is a research-based activist organization promoting the freedom of expression via its main three channels – research, advocacy, and education.

Athan released the very first report “Status of Freedom of Expression in the First Two Years of Current Government” in June and released another report “Midterm Report on Freedom of Expression” that assessed the incidents of violation of freedom of expression, freedom of press and freedom of peaceful assembly with the new government’s two and half years in power.

Athan received the prestigious Human Rights Tulip Award from the Kingdom of Netherlands in December 2018.

We, as an activist organization, encourage the establishment of laws and mechanism that protect the right to freedom of expression in accordance with democratic standards by monitoring, identifying, documenting, and publishing the laws, mechanisms and procedures which are obstacles to freedom of expression and conducting trainings and advocating the solutions to overcome these obstacles.
