Athan which means “voice” in English, was founded on January 15th 2018 and led by youths who value and respect freedom of expression. Athan is a merger of Research Team for Telecommunications Law and We Support Journalists, with an aim to promote freedom of expression in a more systematic and wide-spreading manner. Athan is a research-based activist organization promoting the freedom of expression via its main three channels – research, advocacy and education.
Athan released the very first report “Status of Freedom of Expression in the First Two Years of Current Government” in June and released another report “Midterm Report on Freedom of Expression” that assessed the incidents of violation of freedom of expression, freedom of press and freedom of peaceful assembly with the new government’s two and half years in power.
Athan received the prestigious Human Rights Tulip Award from the Kingdom of Netherlands in December 2018.
