According to the findings of Athan, freedom of expression activist organization, by April 10, 2019, there are totally 14 formal cases against 37 people under the Law Protecting the Privacy and Security of Citizens.

All of the cases include three lawsuits over the criticism of government and MPs, two lawsuits over the criticism of the State Counsellor and two lawsuits over the criticism of a political party.

A member of National League for Democracy (NLD) party also filed a lawsuit against a citizen for criticizing General Aung San while a State MP and her relative filed lawsuits against 17 people who sent complaint letter about her to a committee of State Parliament.

Among the total 14 cases under the Law Protecting the Privacy and Security of Citizens, seven cases are related to the expression on social media.

The Law Protecting the Privacy and Security of Citizens was enacted on March 8, 2017. Although purpose of the law is to protect the privacy and security of citizens, Athan found that the law is used to restrict the right to freedom of expression in practice instead.
